NEW YORK -Tennessee defensive lineman Malik Jackson (2010-11) became the Vols' 330th all-time NFL Draft selection when the Denver Broncos chose him in the fifth round with the 137th overall pick Saturday at Radio Music City Hall in New York.

Tennessee, which has produced the SEC's most NFL draft picks and the seventh most of any school nationally, saw Jackson become the third UT defensive lineman taken since 2009, joining first-rounders Dan Williams (2010) and Robert Ayers (2009).

Ayers was also a Broncos' selection and is still on the Denver roster. Jackson also joins former Vols Britton Colquitt and Peyton Manning in Denver.

Jackson is the 63rd Vol drafted since 2000, which currently ranks second in the conference and fifth nationally, including 14 other defensive linemen. Four of those Vols' defensive linemen (Shaun Ellis, Justin Harrell, Rashad Moore and Darwin Walker) have played in the Super Bowl.

Jackson, who played in the Senior Bowl in late January, was named to the All-SEC First Team by the media in 2011 and the All-SEC Second Team by the coaches.

Also a 2010 AP All-SEC second team honoree, Jackson led the Vols in tackles for loss (11), sacks (2.5) and quarterback hurries (10). His 56 tackles were a career-high, ranked tied for third on the team and positioned him as one of just two defensive linemen to rank in the SEC's top 50 in tackles per game with an average of 4.6 each outing, placing 50th.

The Northridge, Calif., native was one of seven Vols with multiple pass breakups (2), while also forcing a fumble. His 11 TFLs ranked 12th in the SEC.

JACKSON DRAFT QUOTES FROM DENVER
On where he will play on the defensive line
"I believe they project me to play defensive end."

On how comfortable he is playing on the outside
"I'm really comfortable. That's what I played at the University of Southern California before I transferred. I've been really working at the defensive end area this offseason. I feel really comfortable about this and I feel really good. I'm just ready to go in there and compete for a job."

On his skills as a pass rusher
"I feel that some of my strengths are my arm length--I have really good lengthy arms and I feel that I can use them well. I've got good feet to come up off the edge. I'm pretty knowledgeable about pass rush moves. I pretty much feel that I'm an all-around good defensive end. There are some skills I know I need to work on so I'm ready to get up to Denver and have them check me out, see how I look, and see if they have something I can work on."

On if he knows former University of Tennessee DE Robert Ayers
"I don't know him. He was there before I got there. I'm interested to get to know another UT grad and UT football player and it's exciting."

On his current weight
"I'm at 285 right now."

On his playing weight last season
"I played at like 267. I kind of felt a little small at D-tackle in the SEC, but I just realized it's all about technique and going out there wanting to really know what you're doing. That's what I did and feel like I started to get an upper edge on plays, but I feel really good at 285. I've been working out at it, and I feel really good. "

On leaving Southern California for Tennessee
"It was because I felt like I needed another home. I just wasn't really happy at USC after Pete Carroll left, and I took my talents somewhere else to really show what I have to the next level, and I did and it worked out perfectly for me. I couldn't be happier."

On joining a locker room with several Tennessee Volunteers
"I feel like we've some good Tennessee guys, so hopefully they'll be welcoming me with open arms and I'm pretty excited to play with those kinds of guys."

INDIANAPOLIS - Former Tennessee defensive lineman Malik Jackson stepped on the football field Monday with something to prove, much like he did at Neyland Stadium time and time again over the past two seasons.

Except this time, it was inside the home of the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium for the NFL Combine.

"It was a great experience," Jackson said. "I was just happy that I could come down here with the top prospects in the 2012 NFL Draft and show what I have to offer. I'm glad I had a chance to talk to these teams and let them know who I was and what I have to offer to their franchise."

Jackson posted a 4.91 in the 40-yard dash, recorded 25 reps on the bench press and tallied a 28-inch vertical jump, among other results, but it was his ability to speak about his game that impressed teams the most.

"The biggest thing I felt like I did was talked football, good football with them," Jackson said. "Being with Coach Dooley's staff, they taught me a lot about football and how to not only go out there and play football, but how to go out there and talk football. (The teams) liked the way I knew what I was talking about, knew my plays and knew what to do in certain situations."

Named to the All-SEC first team by the media in 2011 and the second team by the coaches, Jackson led the Vols in tackles for loss (11) sacks (2.5) and quarterback hurries (10).

Parlaying his career-high 56 tackles in 2011 into a Senior Bowl appearance in January, Jackson looks at the opportunities afforded to him while wearing orange as critical to where he's at now in the NFL Draft process.

"If I didn't go to Tennessee or do what I did at Tennessee, I wouldn't really be in this position," Jackson said. "Tennessee helped me so much in what I wanted to do. It offered me a new home to show my skills on a different stage and different level in the SEC in a top-notch environment.

"I just thank Coach Dooley and his staff for giving me the opportunity. I'm just happy I went there because I don't think it could've worked out any better."

While most players go to the NFL Combine to showcase what they've learned, the former Vol used the experience to continue learning.

"Be humble and work hard," Jackson said of the lesson he received. "There are a thousand guys out here that look just like you or have just as much ability as you. You have to stand out from each and every one of them. I just worked hard in everything I tried to do. You just have to go out there, be your best and be you."

For Jackson, that's never been a problem.

JACKSON'S NFL COMBINE RESULTS
40-yard Dash: 4.91 sec
Bench Press: 25 reps
Vertical Jump: 28.0 inch
Broad Jump: 105.0 inch
3-cone Drill: 7.38 sec
20-yard Shuttle: 4.41 sec

For just the 11th time in school history, multiple players were found on the SEC's Players of the Week list. Senior DL Malik Jackson earned SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week, while freshman LB Curt Maggitt was awarded SEC Freshman of the Week honors, the league office announced Monday.

Recognized for their performances in Tennessee's 27-24 overtime win over Vanderbilt on Saturday, Jackson and Maggitt became the first Tennessee duo to be honored by the SEC in the same week since Eric Berry and Jerod Mayo in 2007.

In the win, Jackson recorded six tackles, including 1.5 for a loss of 16, a forced fumble and a pair of quarterback hurries. His forced fumble, which was returned by junior defensive back Rod Wilks to the Vanderbilt 25, set up Tennessee's first touchdown.

Jackson leads the Vols with nine tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and 10 quarterback hurries, which are the most by a Vol since Wes Brown had 12 in 2008.

Maggitt earned SEC Freshman of the Week accolades after posting seven tackles, including 2.5 stops that set the Commodores back six yards. His 2.5 tackles for loss were the most in a game by a Vol this season.

With 49 tackles, Maggitt is fourth on the Vols and second among all SEC freshmen. Additionally, his 5.5 TFLs rank third on the team.

The West Palm Beach, Fla., native is UT's second SEC Freshman of the Week honoree this season. Fellow linebacker A.J. Johnson earned the award for his performance against Alabama. It marks the first time Tennessee has had multiple rookies win the award in a single season.

HOOVER, Ala. -- Three Vols were named to the 2011 SEC Media Days Preseason All-SEC Team. Senior defensive lineman Malik Jackson is on the first team, junior defensive back Janzen Jackson is on the second team and senior tailback Tauren Poole is on the third.

The Vols were also predicted to finish fourth in the SEC East by the media with a vote total of 496. UT received two first-place votes. Ahead of the Vols in the East were: 1. South Carolins (931), 2. Georgia 794, 3. Florida 731 while UT was followed by 5. Kentucky 340 and 6. Vanderbilt.

The preseason honors continue to roll in for Malik Jackson, he was also named to the first team on the SEC Coaches Preseason Team. Jackson is also on the preseason watch list for the Rotary Lombardi Award, Bronko Nagurski Award and Outland Trophy.

Jackson's production exploded after moving inside to defensive tackle at Georgia (Oct. 9). In the final eight games, the senior recorded 36 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, all five of his sacks, three QB hurries, four passes defended and an interception.

For Janzen Jackson, this is his first preseason accolade in 2011 after a strong 2010 campaign. He was named to the Coaches' All-SEC Second Team last year after he tallied five interceptions and 69 tackles as a sophomore. He led the team with 11 passes defended, which ranked sixth in the SEC.

His tackles totals was the most among all players in the secondary last year and placed him 19th in the SEC among DBs. Jackson made a career-high 11 tackles in the regular-season finale win over Kentucky.

Poole has earned several preseason watch list recognitions this summer. He is a candidate for the Maxwell Award and the Doak Walker Award.

Poole is one of eight SEC tailbacks and 51 overall eligible for the Doak Walker Award. The Toccoa, Ga., native tied for the SEC lead with six 100-yard rushing games in 2010 en route to just the 16th 1,000-yard season in Tennessee history with 1,034 yards, which ranks as the 14th-best single season total at UT. He is one of 24 tailbacks on the Doak Walker Award Watch List to top 1,000 yards rushing in 2010.

In his first year as the starter, Poole earned Associated Press All-SEC honorable mention accolades, while leading the Vols with 12 total touchdowns.

KNOXVILLE - Tennessee senior defensive lineman Malik Jackson and junior defensive back Prentiss Waggner earned selections to the 2011 SEC Coaches Preseason All-SEC Team, adding to numerous preseason honors for the upperclassman standouts. Jackson was named to the first team, while Waggner notched a spot on the third team.

The defensive duo has also been recognized on multiple preseason award watch lists. Waggner leads the team with his name on four watch lists (Chuck Bednarik Award, Lott IMPACT Trophy, Bronko Nagurski Award and the Jim Thorpe Award), while Jackson has been named to three (Bronko Nagurski Award, Outland Trophy and Rotary Lombardi Award).

Jackson led the Vols' defensive line with 48 tackles in 2010, including a team-high 11 tackles for loss. The Northridge, Calif., native also ranked second on the UT squad with five sacks and third with four pass break-ups and five quarterback hurries.

Jackson's production exploded after moving inside to defensive tackle at Georgia (Oct. 9). In the final eight games, the senior recorded 36 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, all five of his sacks, three QB hurries, four passes defended and an interception.

Waggner, who earned Associated Press second team All-SEC and Scout.com second team All-America honors in 2010, broke the UT season record for interceptions returned for touchdowns, taking an NCAA FBS-leading three to the end zone.

The Clinton, La., native tied for seventh in the FBS and first in the SEC with three recovered fumbles last season, while also tying for the team lead with five INTs. His eight total takeaways were the most by a Vol since Deon Grant picked off nine passes in 1999.

Additionally, Waggner recorded 57 tackles, to rank fifth on the squad, along with nine passes defended, which was second among the Vols.

Tennessee opens up fall practice Tuesday, Aug. 2.
