Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero and Police Chief David Rausch awarded the Medal of Merit Award to Knoxville Police Department Officer Mike Riddle. Officer Riddle has been with KPD since April 1989.

Mayor Rogero, Officer Riddle, Chief RauschChief Rausch said that on November 1, 2011, Officer Riddle was on patrol when he observed heavy smoke coming from the rear of the Aston Apartment Building at 2736 E. Magnolia Avenue. Officer Riddle immediately notified E-911 dispatch to alert the Knoxville Fire Department.

Chief Rausch said, "When Officer Riddle pulled into the apartment's parking lot, he observed flames exiting from the west side of the building. Without hesitation, he immediately entered the rear of the building where he encountered dense smoke filling the hallways, limiting visibility and breathing."

Officer Riddle began to pound on the apartment doors to alert the residents of the fire. He then assisted numerous occupants to safety including an elderly person who needed assistance with walking.

Chief Rausch said, "Officer Riddle's quick response to a very dangerous situation resulted in the smooth and timely evacuation of several residents of the apartment complex."

Mayor Rogero said, "Officer Riddle is very deserving of this special award for going above and beyond the call of duty to help protect his fellow citizens. Congratulations on a job well done."
